Listening to a very inspiring book by William L. Shirer.
I haven’t read many books on World War II and I don’t like this subject. There are some exceptions, though: I loved Remarque’s books and know I’m enjoying listening to Berlin Diary.
Its name says all for itself. I can just add how vivid those stories are. How fast and easy I plunged in the depth of events before and during the War. I didn’t know anything about life in Germany at that period. So now I can compare this picture to one in the Soviet Union and even to nowadays Russia.
I think, Shirer made his way up pretty early: he starts his diary when he was only 30. I find his judgements very mature and analysis professional. I understand he wrote the book much later, but consistency of his diary show him as a developed personality at the time of events.
I adore this consistency, as I can’t make myself keep a diary the same way.
